Can noise cause hearing damage in children or teenagers?
We live in an increasingly noise-polluted environment and sadly young children and teenagers are at a higher risk of noise-induced hearing loss.
This is largely due to increased usage of earbud headphones, online gaming, and the prevalence of technology that can be used for entertainment.
Studies conducted in the USA have shown that young people can spend up to 4 hours a day using headphones and that, on occasion, sound levels in the ear canals can reach 100dB – about the same as a pneumatic drill, jackhammer, or speeding freight train! It would take only a few minutes of exposure to this before permanent hearing damage occurs!
It is important that children, from a young age, understand the treasure they have in good hearing and the need to look after it responsibly.
Here’s a scary statistic – worldwide, about 5 million children have noise-induced hearing loss or hearing damage as a result of a loud sound exposure. Most of this loss is entirely preventable.
