Services

Powell &Debideen at Listenhear Audiology offers a wide range of Diagnostic Audiology services for all age groups. We pride ourselves on patient-centred care to provide you with the best service at all times.

Diagnostic Hearing Evaluations

Different tests are used to test hearing for different age groups. All tests are performed in a sound proof booth using the appropriate method for the person’s age.

The results of the tests are available immediately and will be discussed with you at the end of the appointment. The goal of a diagnostic hearing test is to determine the patient’s level of hearing, and if a hearing loss is present to determine the type and degree of that hearing loss so that an appropriate treatment plan can be made.

New-born Hearing screenings

Hearing testing on infants can be done as early as 48 hours after birth. Babies cannot give a reliable behavioral response to sound, and so a direct response from the hearing organ is measured while the baby is sleeping or lying quietly.

Testing is non-invasive, pain free, and provides an immediate indication that the hearing organs have developed and are responding to incoming sounds. It is highly recommended that all babies are tested at birth.

Industrial Hearing screenings and Diagnostics

It is of great importance that people exposed to high levels of noise in their workplace have their hearing monitored on an annual basis. We provide occupational baseline and annual monitoring tests for workers.

We also provide Industrial Diagnostic testing for those workers who were screened at work during an occupational health assessment and where the results indicated the need for further testing.

Hearing Aids Supply and Fitting

Hearing aids vary immensely in design and technology, and it is often difficult to know which product to choose. In order to help you with this choice we assess your needs as a whole. Our recommendations are determined by considering the following:

  • The type and degree of hearing loss
  • Your age
  • Your lifestyle
  • Your physical skills and dexterity
  • And, most importantly, the daily demands on your listening

We include you in the decision making process and often recommend including the important people in your life in this process – communication always involves more than one person and there is a shared responsibility in getting it right!

noise-protection

Did you know that excessive exposure to high noise levels can result in hearing loss? People at risk include:

  • Mine workers
  • Working with or near heavy machinery
  • Military service personnel
  • Musicians and DJ’s
  • Recreational shooters/ hunters
  • Recreational motorcyclists

If you fall into any of the above categories, you should consider using custom made noise protectors. They are made to the exact shape of your ear so that they fit comfortably and are designed to dampen the dangerous sound, but allow speech sounds through.

Ear Plugs and Swim Plugs

Swim Plugs can also be custom made to fit the exact shape of the swimmers ears. These are often recommended for children with grommets or holes in the eardrums, or people who suffer from recurrent middle ear infections.

School Hearing Screenings

Hearing screening remains an area of importance, especially in a school environment. The ability to early identify hearing loss, impacted wax, ear infections and auditory processing disorders, are vital for the academic success of learners. We provide on site hearing screenings at schools.
