New-born Hearing Screenings

Early detection of hearing loss is crucial for a child’s speech, language, and cognitive development. At ListenHear Audiology, we offer new-born hearing screenings that can be done as early as 48 hours after birth — giving parents peace of mind right from the start.

How the Screening Works

Unlike older children and adults, new-borns cannot respond behaviorally to sound. Instead, we use advanced, non-invasive technology to measure the direct response of the hearing organ (the cochlea) while your baby is sleeping or resting quietly.

The two most common screening methods are:

  • Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE): Measures sound waves produced in the inner ear

  • Automated Auditory Brainstem Response (AABR): Measures how the hearing nerve and brain respond to sound

These tests are completely safe, pain-free, and quick, and the results are available immediately.

Why Early Hearing Screening Matters

Hearing loss is one of the most common congenital conditions, but it’s not always immediately noticeable. Identifying hearing issues early allows for timely intervention, which can significantly improve your child’s communication and learning outcomes.

We strongly recommend that all new-borns be screened at birth, whether or not there are any known risk factors.
